In Austin, Integral Care crisis line offers support and referrals for services.
The National Suicide Prevention hotline provides confidential and free assistance 24/7. There is online chat, texting, and a hotline, as well as resources for those that are deaf or hard of hearing.
Queer-Affirming Support
The Trevor Project offers emergency and crisis support as well as resources for individuals and social support/connection for queer youth ages 13-24. Text START to 678678 for more information.
The Trans Lifeline offers peer support and connection to resources, including help with ID changes.
The LGBT Hotline is a confidential space to talk about issues for queer people of all ages.
Eating Disorder and Body Image Resources
The National Alliance for Eating Disorders is a great resource to get connected with providers. There are also more regionally-specific options: The Columbia River Eating Disorder Network in the pacific northwest and Central Texas Eating Disorder Specialists in Texas can help with this as well.
The National Association To Advance Fat Acceptance, or NAAFA, is an amazing organization doing all kinds of work to end weight stigma and injustice.
The Center for Body Trust offers resources, workshops, and trainings for both individuals and healthcare providers wanting to unlearn fatphobia and bias.
Eating Disorder and Body Image Books
Fat Talk by Virginia Sole-Smith is a wonderful book for parents (or anyone doing some reparenting work with themselves!).
The Art of Body Acceptance by Ashlee Bennett is a great art workbook to use in conjunction with therapy or on your own.
Both of Aubrey Gordon’s books are wonderful, evidence-based resources for unlearning fatphobia. I recommend she and Michael Hobbe’s podcast, Maintenance Phase, as well!
The Body Is Not An Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor, Hunger by Roxane Gay, and Body Positive Power by Megan Jayne Crabbe are all books that incorporate the author’s own body stories and systems of oppression that cause and impact body shame. For all of these, please note there is a content warning for trauma and abuse.
Reclaiming Body Trust by Hilary Kinavy and Dana Sturtevant provides an inclusive guide to reconnecting with one’s own body and healing in the context of a fatphobic culture
Mindfulness and Anxiety Management
Kristin Neff offers resources and mindful exercises for self-compassion that I find compassionate and helpful.
Tara Brach combines eastern spiritual practices and western psychology to approach mindfulness and spiritual healing.
Insight Timer is a free app that provides guided meditations and self-guided meditation background sounds. I’ve tried a lot of mindfulness apps and this is my favorite!
Breathwrk is another app which provides free and paid options for breathing exercises along with visuals. I like that the offerings can be as short as one minute for a quick grounding moment.
The Free Mindfulness Project offers downloadable free resources from a variety of providers.
Couples and Families
Esther Perel’s podcast Where Should We Begin, as well as her books Mating in Captivity and State of Affairs serve to help individuals and couples navigate and maintain healthy relationships from an open-minded, trauma-informed, and evidence-based perspectice.
The Gottman Institute has a free app that provides card decks for couples in all relationship stages to use to start conversation and deepen connection.
The Power of Discord and The Dance of Anger are two books I recommend to couples and families to help explore anger and conflict in healthy ways.
The Transgender Youth Equality Foundation offers support for transgender kids as well as resources for their parents to help advocate for their kids safety in school and medical care.
Uniquely Knitted is a wonderful resource for anyone who is currently or in the past struggled with infertility. Their offerings include a wonderful podcast as well as peer support groups.
Twig and Branch Parenting offers playgroups for infants and toddlers, parent coaching, and customized baby registry lists with an affirming and compassionate lens. For help with kids’ sleep specifically, Greenhouse Doula is a wonderful resource.
